Reflections

1. What I learned
  • Designs of visuals: make it as simple as possible, but make strong impressions too. Big images, Big font.
  • Use hand gestures effectively
  • Make lots of eye contact
  • Face the audience, not the script nor screen
  • Using the voice effectively: Pause, Emphasize, Stretch (adjectives, numbers, verbs, negatives)
  • Importance of preparation and rehersal
  • Ways for transitions.

2.Improvements for the future

  • Posture(do not slouch!)
  • Use hand gestures more effectively
  • Dont look at script!(make index cards, not scripts)

3.

AEP presentation Self Analysis

These were my goals for the presentation.
I will refer to them as I reflect my presentation and set new goals for the next one.

1.Preparation/Rehersal
Reflection: I found the images that fitted what I wanted to present quite easily, and the process of choosing what to say went pretty smoothly. However, I needed to practice more. There were parts in the presentation where I repeated things even when they were not so important because I did not get the grammer right. This probably shows the audience that I am nervous.
Goal: I will try to practice more, but I am not sure how I should practice because when I practice alot, I tend to end up memorizing what I am going to say, which makes me sound monotone. I would like to find a way of practicing that does not make me end up sound boring.

2.Voice
Reflection:I am not sure if my goal of speaking clearly so everyone can hear was realized. When I listened to the video, I could not really hear my vioce at a regular volume, so I might have to speak louder. Also, I might be speaking too slow... Even if I am not, I should choose when to speak slowly to emphasize, and when to speak in a regular speed. I think I had almost no emphasis.
Goals:I would like to speak with more volume the next time. Also, I want to consider which sentences to speak slowly and which to not. Most of all, I want to put more emphasis. I would like to research more ways of emphasizing and practice it.

3.Body language
Reflection: I think I took some eye contact but the time that I was looking at the controller and screen was longer. I definately did not do well on my hand gestures. I kept fidgeting with the controller and its string. I do not think my posture was so bad...
Goals:I need to make more eye contact with the audience. If I do so, it probably gives the impression that I am comfortable with speaking in front of them and that lets them concentrate on what I have to say. Most importantly, I have to work on my hand gestures. I would like to pay attention to how other people use their hands when presenting something.

4.Visuals
Reflection: I think the simple words I used in the slides made it easier to understand what I most wanted to say for each slide. I took too much time changing the slides. The process of looking down, checking where the button was, pushing it, looking at the screen, took too much time.
Goals: This overlaps with the goal for body language, but I want to spend less time looking at the controller and screen, and spend more time making eye contact with the audience.

5.Questions
What is a good way to practice so that you do not sound like you have memorized it, but you are still comfortable enough to make plenty of eye contact with the audience?

My Goals for Pres. No1

PAL Goals
Purpose
-I want to tell the audience what I am passionate about and why. Also, by looking at this presentation afterwards, I will be able to analyze my presentation skills and try to make them better.
Audience
-Mark, Sylvane, and my AEP classmates
Logistics
-within three minutes
-one question per presentation
-visuals
-on Monday December 20th at ILC-101 during third period

Personal Goals
1. Preparation/rehersal
I want to find the images/pictures to put in the power point in order to get an idea of what I might say. Secondly, I will decide what to talk about. Thirdly, I will write dowm in simple words what I want to say in the presentation. Then, I will look for specific photos that support my ideas. After I have finished creating my power point, I will practice as much as I can before class. I will stand up and practice in front of the mirror.

2.Content/Overall impression
I want to tell the audience that I love samba and the reasons for it. There are three main reasons and I would like to explain them in a way that would be easy for everyone to understand. As for overall impression, I would like everyone to get a more detailed idea of what samba is and to know that I really really like it.

3.Voice
I want to make sure most importantly that I speak so everyone can hear me. I want to speak clearly, not too quiet, not too loud. I want to speak slowly, but not too slowly. I also want to put more emotion in my voice because it always sounds monotone and boring. I might be able to do that by taking pauses after each sentence and before something important.

4.Body language
I want to use it as a support of my presentation, not as something that disturbs the audience. In order to do that, I think I should use my hands in a natural way that connects to the content of the presentation. I also tend to not use my hands and have them behind my back when I am nervous, so I would like to avoid that.

5.Visuals
I want to make sure the visuals help the audience get a better understanding. I also want to use visuals to make my presentation more interesting, something that draws their sttention. I want to use some pictures that were on the internet and some that are personal pictures with members of LAMBS in it. I am still wondering if I should use the actual tool (insturment) in front of everyone or not...

These are my goals for presentation no.1 on December 20th.

TED video

Tony Robbins asks why we do what we do Video on TED.com

a)I liked the content of the presentation. I agree with the opinion that you can do anything if you have the emotion (resourcefulness), not the resources. I have also experienced doing better than I thought when I really put my mind to it. I also agree that fulfillment is a very important gaol in life.

b)There are four things that I thought the speaker was good at. Firstly, he uses different speed during the speech effectively. He ususally speaks pretty fast but when he talks about important parts, he slows down and emphasizes his words using pauses. Secondly, he uses hand gestures to emphasize important words and make it easier to understand. Thirdly, he offers many opportunities for the audience to participate. For example, he has a system of asking the audience to say 'I' if they agree. I think this keeps the audience alert and makes the speech more interesting for them. Also, he uses power point for important parts that he wants the audience to remember. I liked how he used power point as a visual aid and not something that the audience watches all the time. Not all parts of his speech were on the power point, just the important ones.

c)There are two things that could be improved. His language is not very clean. He uses words like 'bullshit' without any hesitance and I did not feel very good hearing these words in a presentatoin. Other people may think the same way as well. Also, he made fun of an audience's remark during his speech. From the way he said it, he probably did not mean any harm and said it as a joke. However, not everyone in the audience was laughing, which implies that the audience did not think so well of it. Overall, some people might have been offended hearing his speech.
